Please can we ask you to be on the lookout for rogue traders operating from a white Ford Transit van with the registration number NG54 OPA.

These traders are offering to replace guttering and claddings in the Stratford and Bidford areas but intelligence suggests that this may well be more widespread.

Trading Standards have been alerted but please could we remind you to take the following steps when using a contractor or trader in order to protect your property and yourself:

Always ask for identification and check the authenticity of it by checking the number given, either in the phone book or on the internet. Do not ring the number on the card given as this may be bogus and another member of the rogue trading team could be on the end of the phone waiting for your call.

This may take a few minutes but a genuine caller/ trader will understand and will not mind waiting.

Always use a trusted company. Use someone who has been recommended to you or someone that you have found through the telephone book or a trade directory.
Always get a minimum of three quotes to make a comparison and to ensure that you are not being overcharged. Ensure that you get a copy of the estimate in writing before work commences.

Do not be intimidated by callers at your door. You are allowed to say NO. You are even allowed and encouraged not to answer the door to anyone you do not know or are not expecting.

If in doubt always ask the visitor to call back when you have a neighbour or relative with you. Legitimate traders will be happy to do this and anyone calling from the utility companies will have made an appointment with you before attending your home.

A plea from one of our PCSOs

Dear All,

Yesterday whilst out on patrol in one of our local villages I was shocked and amazed to witness,
a local resident leave the rear of their property approach their car with no key in hand and simplyopen the vehicle retrieve an item and then shut the car door with no attempt to lock it, the resident a few minutes later came back to the car and replaced the item and again no attempt to lock the car and left it open for the world.

When asked Why?

The response was "Well its only Harbury, nothing happens here"

This is a common response in which the local policing team come across with members of our community,even victims of crime who for example; have been victims of burglary and then when a follow visit is carried out by the SNT.

The front door is still unlocked, ground floor windows left open and unattended, and sheds and garages still not padlocked and being left open.

It is vital the message is passed on that sadly no longer are the days gone by of the scenario of being able to leave the front door open for the calling neighbour, no longer can a vehicle be left unlocked and not driven off, no longer can a shed or garage be open to the world for all to look and not touch.

Protection of Property and Prevention of Loss is the only way forward.

Trading Standards Update - 01/02/2012 Bogus Caller/Insulation Hard Sell

Warwickshire Trading Standards has receiveda complaint that an elderly lady living in Nuneaton received an unexpectedvisit from someone that claimed to be selling insulation. The caller insistedthat the insulation work would have to be done and that resident wouldhave to pay. The caller was described as being very threatening. The residentwas unable to get the name of the business.

There are a number of companies presentlyoperating across Warwickshire offering loft and cavity wall insulation.Some sell their services door to door or over the phone, others advertisein local newspapers or use flyers.

Warwickshire Trading Standards does not adviseconsumers to choose the first business who comes to their door. Residentsshould shop around for the best prices and go on recommendation if possible.Some residents may be eligible for home insulation grants and are advisedto find out more by visiting www.direct.gov.ukand search 'Warmfront'.

Finally, it can be hard to tell a goodtrader from a bad one on the doorstep. If in doubt, keep your door closed

Your Rural Business has become a target for thieves NOW is the time to act!

Q. WHY?!?! The Police do not do anything???
A. Policing is determined by the National Intelligence Model, which is driven by recorded incidents and recorded crime.

If you don't report incidents or crime then rural crime "is off the radar".

Here is some crime prevention that can help to try and reduce Rural Crime.

Your business is your castle . . .

Our ancestors had full control over entry and exits to their castles.
They achieved this by having a combined entry and exit point using gates, watch towers, moats, walls and guards.

Look closely at the perimeter of your property, remove all gates and entrances that you no longer use.
Plant thorn hedges with deep ditches and bunds.
Change the layout of your business to establish a single entrance and exit.
Place a gate at the public end to your entrance to make it less inviting.
Place a second inner gate at the private end of entrance to your property.
Invert and cap gate hinges so that gates cannot be lifted off, or use good padlocks with covers so they cannot be cut off. Also ensure all fixing bolts cannot be removed.
If a gate is not being used for a lengthy period, place a temporary obstruction in front of it so it cannot be opened or used for parking or rubbish tipping.
Use locking posts or temporary obstructions to control large openings to yards
Cattle grids should be removable and locked out of position when not in use.
Place CCTV at the inner gate to record the number plates of vehicles and the faces of drivers. Place CCTV signs up as well.
Install sensor controlled 'dusk to dawn' security lights to alert you to visitors
Install an infra red device at the inner gate which will sound an alarm / bell to alert you to visitors.
Join Farm Watch, obtain signs from your local team and place them on your gate posts.
Place signs stating 'you do not buy from calling sales persons'

Protect your Property . . .
Historically, many Farm buildings were built for Storage, not for Security. Now they need to be secure as well as to provide cover.

Put yourself in the place of a thief; inspect your buildings and upgrade your storage to reflect the value of the property stored in it. Fit high quality locks. Ensure the fabric of the building is secure. Seek advice from a Police Crime prevention Officer.
Add indoor security by installing sensors with audible alarms. Display signs to show you have alarms installed.
Consider CCTV
Store all your property indoors when not in use.
Keep all doors locked, except when the building or office is in use and there is someone present
If your building shell is poor, use secondary secure storage such as a container.

Tractors, Agricultural Machinery and Trailers . . .

Nothing should be stored or kept in a visible location, except when in use. When vehicles or plant of any sort are kept outside they should be kept locked and the keys kept in your possession or in a locked key cupboard.

Prepare for a loss . . .

All property must be uniquely marked, photographed and recorded in an asset register that includes serial, chassis and model numbers.
Use property marking solutions to uniquely mark all types of property, or post code your property in a non-visible place and photograph it. Marking solutions: Smartwater - www.smartwater.com or Selectamark - www.selectamark.co.uk or Identidot - www.identidot.com
If your property is high value fit a tracking device or a data tracking chip. Your insurance company, or a Police Crime Prevention Officer will be able to advice you on the best product.
Register valuable plant; the national plant and equipment register (www.ter-europe.org) runs an international database of owned and stolen equipment. It employs staff who work with law enforcement agencies to identify and recover stolen equipment. You can register five items for free. Tractors and other agricultural machinery, trailers, caravans, quarry equipment and generators are amongst the most stolen items.

Computer and Identity Security . . .

Your computer is vulnerable to electronic theft as well as thieves. Ensure you have an up-to-date virus checker and firewall if you use email or the internet.
Identity theft is an emerging crime. Buy a home shredder for all unwanted personal documents.

Diesel Tanks . . .

Avoid sitting storage tanks in isolated areas such as outlying buildings. A mobile bowser could be used instead and removed to a secure location when not in use.
For tanks located close to an electricity supply there are additional options - better lighting, motion sensors and alarms - to act as further deterrents.

Caravan Storage . . .
Caravans are very desirable and thieves will go to extraordinary measures to steal them. There are existing industry standards which you should aspire to.

The Caravan Storage Site Owners association (www.cassoa.co.uk) has a scheme for accrediting storage facilities. Secured by Design (www.securebydesign.com) have a secure caravan parks accreditation scheme.

Rural Arson . . .
Rural businesses have many sensitive potential arson locations.

Hay and Straw should be removed from fields as soon as possible after harvesting.
Hay and Straw should be stored: Separately from other buildings, particularly those housing fuels, agrochemicals and machinery. Also in stacks reasonable size, spaced at least 10 meters apart, separately from livestock housing as well.
Petrol, Diesel and other fuels should be stored in secure areas and storage tanks outlets should be padlocked
Fertilisers and pesticides should be kept under lock and key. The health & safety executive can provide further advice on the storage and transportation of fertilisers, particularly ammonium nitrate.
Refuse should be disposed of safely and on a regular basis.

Local Community . . .
A Strong sense of community still exists in rural locations.

Join the Farm Watch Scheme or if already joined encourage other people to join.

12/01/2012 ‘Microsoft’ Scam TelephoneCalls Target Business and Consumers

Have you received a phone call from Steveof Microsoft, happy to fix the ‘problem’ with your computer?

Then warn Warwickshire County Council’sTrading Standards Service, you are one of many Warwickshire consumersand businesses who have been targeted by this ‘computer fix’ scam.

The unexpected phone calls come from peoplewho falsely claim to represent Microsoft. Recipients are told that thereis a serious problem with their computer that needs’ fixing’. These claimsare entirely bogus.

The phone calls are believed to originatefrom outside the UK and the callers use phone directories and marketingsurvey information to randomly target the unsuspecting consumer or business– they don’t even know if the recipient has a computer!

The caller asks the computer user to turnon their machine and give them remote access to it, so that the fictitiousproblem can be rectified.

Giving access to your computer to someoneyou don't know could lead to your PC becoming infected with viruses andother malware, or your personal or financial information being stolen andused fraudulently. Or you may have software downloaded on to your PC or'work' done unnecessarily for which you may then be asked for payment.

Awareness of these scams is key to combatingthem.

Microsoft do not make unsolicited (unexpected)phone calls to consumers.
Never allow anyone you don't know or trustto take control of your PC.
Never download any software on to your PCif you are not certain what it does, where it comes from and that it issafe.
Never give your credit or debit card numberto anyone who you receive an unsolicited call from - they could be criminalsand could steal
your card details.

Residents are warned to beware of a new bogusHMRC 'tax rebate' email. The emails carry attachments and a request forpersonal and financial details which have to be completed and sent beforethe 'cheque' is issued.

Warwickshire Trading Standards warn thatthese are phishing emails sent by criminal gangs with the sole purposeof stealing your personal and financial information.

There is no tax rebate and no money willbe sent. Avoid opening phishing emails or any attachments they may contain.Never follow a link in a phishing email - delete them.

26/01/2012 Clairvoyant or Psychic Scams

Warwickshire Trading Standards has receiveda number of complaints recently about clairvoyant or psychic scamletters. All such letters operate in the same way, offering the receiver'magic objects', lottery number predictions and 'guaranteed' rewards etc.in return for a small one off payment of £20 - £30. Some requests for paymentare backed with 'occult threats' of 'future evil' for those failing torespond.

Whilst most recipients will consider suchletters to be complete nonsense, a small number of very vulnerable peopleeach year do fall for these scams and in return they receive every morescams through the post and by telephone. Never respond to a clairvoyantor psychic scam letter.

Safe outside?

Many people take a great deal of trouble securing their house and the property
within it . . . but what about sheds and garages?

Sheds . . .
With the array of lawnmowers, power tools, garden equipment, bicycles, sports and other valuable equipmentkept in them, security measures should certainly be put in place.

Make sure that shed is near to the house or clearly visible from the house
Make sure that the door, door frame and walls are solid and replace any damaged or rotten areas with new sections
Often sheds are left unlocked or without any appropriate security, such as padlocks, chains or lighting. By installing these simple items can give better protection to your property.
Replace broken glass panes with laminated glass. Fit windows with a grille fixed to steel plates inside the shed
Fit key-operated window locks on opening windows. if the windows are never opened, screw them permanently shut from the inside.
Use metal rings and chains fixed to the shed frame with security screws to enable you to secure your electrical items, ladders and tools
Fit a battery powered alarm. These can be purchased from DIY stores and garden centres
Make sure your household policy covers sheds, garages and outbuildings.

Garages . . .

If you have a household alarm fitted, consider extending the system into the garage area to detect intruders
Purchase a separate garage alarm, which can be connected to a standard electrical 240v socket with a three pin plug.
Fit a garage door blocker on the outside of the door. This products bolts permanently to the floor, has a large 'T' bar shaped restrictor and a quality locking device.
Consider fitting a pair of garage doors that are fitted either vertically or horizontally and can be locked either from the inside or the outside of the garage.
Install dead bolts mounted one on each edge of the door inside the garage. When in use, the locks throw a bolt into the doorframe or the concrete floors of the garage.
Various good quality 'up and over' or 'rolling' deadlocking door handles can be purchased to replace the existing poor quality locks to give better security.
Consider purchasing loop cables. These have a long braided steel cable and a two-bolt anchor locking point. These fix to garage walls or floors and can be passed through expensive property such as quad bikes, etc. Some cables are alarmed.

Property . . .
Gardening tools and garden furniture are not cheap - what's more they are very saleable items for a thief. Don't make it easy for them to be stolen, and remember that tools stolen from your shed could be used to burgle your house, or someone else's.

Postcode or property mark anything in your shed or garage that is of value and might be stolen, for example, lawnmowers, garden furniture, bicycles, sports equipment.
Take photographs of expensive items - they may be useful to police for identifying the goods and returning them to you, should you unfortunate enough to have them stolen.
Never leave garden tools and equipment outside, even if you are just popping back into the house. It only takes minutes for an opportunist thief to take them.

Outdoors . . .
You can make it difficult for a thief to get into your garden.

Fit lights which come on when it gets dark and turn themselves off when it becomes light. Alternatively. install lights that come on automatically with a movement sensor.
Make sure all fences are in good repair and that panels cannot be easily moved or lifted. The height for a perimeter fence or wall around the back garden is 1.8 metres (6ft). Attaching trellis to the top of the wood panels can increase the height of a fence and act as a further deterrent.
Fit a padlock or bolt on the inside of all garden gates for security
Laying a thick gravel path makes it impossible for thieves to approach without making a noise and is a good crime reduction alternative to slabs and concrete.
Plant protection is another way of guarding your property. A selection of thorny bushes and prickly plants planted near to potential access routes, such as fences or walls, are not only visual deterrent but also a physical barrier to intruders. While these methods are ideal for making forced entry difficult through natural means, they should not replace traditional security measures such as padlocks or chains.

Remember the more difficult it is for a thief to enter your property the more likely they will leave it alone, they do not like noise or light or preventative measures which requires their time and the bigger chance of them being seen or heard.

Chapel St, Bishops Itchington. Approx 8:30pm 14/01 occupants have heard a noise, on further investigation the next morning they have discovered that unknown
offenders have smashed a double glazed unit to the front door of the property. A group of youths were seen in the area the night of the 14/01 and were challenged by a
member of the public. Lines of Enquiries on-going.

a) At 3:10pm 22/12 a section of fencing was damaged in the Recreation area by known offender.
b) Between 7:45pm and 7:50pm 08/01 damage has been caused to the CCTV camera on the Sports Pavillon.
Shows 3 youths, 2 male and 1 female approx 15-17yrs old. Shows 1 male smashed the camera with a traffic cone and piece of wood.
c) Approx 11am 08/01 the same fencing as a) has been damaged by the same known offender and another male youth.

Odingsell Drive, Long Itchington. Between 8:30am and 7:30pm 09/01 unknown offenders have entered a secure property and occupants are unsure if anything has been taken.

The Green, Long Itchington. Between Midnight and 1am 16/01 occupants of property have disturbed a unknown male attempting to break into their vehicle.
Police attended but no trace was found.

Warwickshire Trading Standards Service iswarning computer users to beware of another 'computer fix' scam that hastargeted residents in the Leamington Spa area.

Householders have reported receiving unexpectedphone calls from a business with an 0161 Manchester area code. The callerinitially claims to represent Microsoft although some consumers have reportedthat they sometimes withdraw the claim, later in the conversation.

The callers claim to be phoning to fix (anin reality), non-existent 'slow computer' problem and request remote accessto the residents computer. The callers, who use a variety of names including:Frank Morrison, David Watson, Steve and Charlie Brown claim the fix willbe free but later demand several hundred pounds after doing little or nothingto the computer.

This is a scam.

Awareness of these scams is key to combatingthem.

Microsoft do not make unsolicited (unexpected)phone calls to consumers.
Never allow anyone you don't know or trustto take control of your PC.
Never download any software on to your PCif you are not certain what it does, where it comes from and that it issafe.
Never give your credit or debit card numberto anyone who you receive an unsolicited call from - they could be criminalsand could steal your card details.
If you do think there is some thing wrongwith your PC contact a local repair service and go on recommendation.

Rural crime crackdown

Dorchester Police went out on overnight patrol as part of Operation Shogun, a high-profile initiative to deter people from committing crimes in the rural community. They were joined by game keepers and farmers who acted as spotters for suspicious vehicles in the area.

Suspicious vehicles were stopped and searched. The operation discovered one car full of people that had previous convictions for rural crimes.

The situation in Warwickshire is equally serious so please report any suspicious activity.

Metal theft in the UK reaches epidemic proportions

More than 1,000 offences are taking place every week, according to official figures. The number of metal thefts has doubled in the past five years and is estimated to cost the economy more than £770 million every year as thieves target the transport system, public buildings such as schools and hospitals, and places of worship.

Thieves have targeted railway lines, church roofs, community centres, war memorials, irreplaceable works of art, manhole covers and even plaques in cemetaries. The number of thefts from churches has doubled in the past three years alone. In some areas, metal theft is reported to represent a tenth of total recorded crime while the British Transport Police now ranks the issue second only to fighting terrorism in its priorities.

Warwickshire County Council’s Trading StandardsService is thanking residents for sending them huge numbers of dubious‘charity’ collection bags in a recent blitz on unscrupulous collectors.Hundreds have already been sent in and Trading Standards Officers continueto receive bags full each week. Officers now have the details of around50 different collectors operating across the County.

The collection phase of the blitz has nowended and the investigation phase is now well under way. Trading StandardsOfficers therefore no longer need residents to send in collection bagsbut would like to thank everyone who helped to get the project off to suchan excellent start.

Tile Scam Kenilworth
A Cubbington householder reported to WarwickshireTrading Standards that he had received an unexpected call from an as yetunknown individual who claimed that he was the manufacturer of the householder'sroof tiles. He stated that the roof tiles were defective and need replacing.The householder was immediately suspicious as he could see no problem withhis roof tiles.

This was probably an unscrupulous approachby a rogue builder wanting to either to re-tile the householder's roof,apply some sort of bogus treatment to the roof or get access to the roofto convince the owner that there were further problems that needed 'fixing'.

Warwickshire Trading Standards Service arewarning people to beware of phone calls from people falsely claiming towork for Age UK. The callers, who target elderly people, offer to set up'trust funds' which they claim would stop the older person having to selltheir home to pay for care costs. The initial contact is usually by phonefollowed by a home visit.

Bogus Safety Magazines
Warwickshire Trading Standards are warningschools, businesses and other organisations about a number of new approachesby bogus publication companies who trick businesses and others in to agreeingto advertise in their publications. These magazines, which usually purportto be safety related have little or no circulation and are essentiallyworthless to the advertiser. However, the bogus publishers charge hundredsand in some cases thousands of pounds for advertising space in them.

The bogus publishers usually cold call theorganisations they target and often falsely claim to represent the Policeor Fire and Rescue Service. They then ask the business, organisation orschool if they want to advertise 'again' (even if they have never advertisedbefore) or 'support' the publication. They hope that some people will betricked in to thinking this is a regular event or that they will be supportinga worthwhile cause. Some rogues go as far sending the business a copy ofan advert the latter had already placed in a genuine publication alongwith an invoice. They hope the recipient will confuse the request for paymentwith a genuine request for advertising payment.

Entries on social networking sites - Can burglars see your information this Christmas?
Warwickshire Police would like to remind those using social networking sites not to post too much information about their movements and whereabouts this Christmas.
George Stepney, Crime Prevention Manager at Warwickshire Police said: “Whilst we understand the popularity of social networking, posting when you’ll be away over the festive season or days when your property will be empty could be all the information an opportunist thief needs to burgle your home. Often the comments are innocent, made purely because people want to share what they are doing over Christmas and New Year with people they know."
To help protect yourself and your property from this harm, please follow the below advice:

Check your privacy settings on social networking sites. Make sure the information you are posting can only be seen by friends and family, not strangers.
Think - Are the people who have access to this information people you really know and trust? If not, remove their access.
Remind children and young people in your household of the importance of the aforementioned points. How well do they know the people they have allowed access to their information? Have they met them before?
Before you post an update think, does this information need to be seen by everyone who has access to your area? If not, consider a one to one form of communication.

Thieves Go Window Shopping Too
Exciting packages full of the latest gadgets, sparkly trinkets, favourite CDs, tasty treats, a bottle of good cheer - all things we would love to give and receive for Christmas.
But car thieves don’t bother to join the hustle and bustle of everyone else, shopping for their Christmas goodies. They do their own window shopping looking into parked cars, to see what has been left on display inside - and what they can steal. So as the Christmas shopping spree gears up Warwickshire Police is reminding people not to leave their Christmas shopping in their cars unattended.
George Stepney, Community Protection Manager with Warwickshire Police said, “It can be difficult walking round with lots of packages, but don’t be tempted to take them back to the car and leave them unattended. If you have large packages you could ask the store where you have bought them if you can collect them when you have finished your other shopping. If Christmas presents are stolen, in addition to being an upsetting and costly experience, you may find it difficult to replace them in time for Christmas. Thieves will steal anything from your car and while it only takes a matter of seconds for them to break in, for the motorist it takes time to get the vehicle repaired, deal with the insurance and cope with the disappointment of losing your property.”
Other advice to reduce the chances of your car being broken into include:

Always park you car in a well lit, well used street, or a public car park which has CCTV coverage.
Always make sure it is locked - check the automatic locking system has operated properly.
Use additional in car security, such as a steering wheel lock.
Remove your Sat Nav, and the front cover from your music system. Don’t hide them elsewhere in the car - thieves know where to look.
Don’t leave other items, such as coats, bags, briefcases or mobile phones in your car.
Review how many CDs you need with you in the car, and write your name on them. They will be less easy to sell if they are stolen.
When travelling in your car lock all the doors to prevent uninvited people getting into your vehicle at the start of your journey, or if you are stopped at traffic lights.
Unload your shopping from the car as soon as you get home.
Always take your car keys out of the ignition whenever you get out of the car, even if it is only for a couple of seconds, and even if you are parked on your driveway.

Don’t let car thieves ruin your work's Christmas party
Warwickshire Police would like to remind the public to secure their vehicles and belongings whilst enjoying their work’s Christmas party.
George Stepney, Crime Prevention Manager at Warwickshire Police said: "We know there are teams of car thieves who visit hotel and public house car parks where they know there will be company drinks or parties taking place after work. Some look for cars arriving just after work and check to see if there are a series of vehicles of the same make, with similar registration numbers or company parking badges in their windscreen, indicating that they are being driven by people from the same organisation. Other thieves will simply sit and watch people arriving at a restaurant, pub or hotel to see if they transfer anything to the boot before they go inside. Car thieves know that once the driver is inside they have a certain amount of time to break into their car and steal any items of value. Thieves tend to target company cars because the likelihood of finding a lap top computer or other high value equipment inside is higher, but all cars are potential targets.”
Those attending work social functions can help to protect their car by:

Removing everything of value from their vehicle before leaving the office for a night out.
Leaving the lap top at work or at home
Asking yourself if you really need to take your briefcase with you in the car when you are going to attend a social gathering.
Leaving the glove compartment open and removing or opening the rear parcel shelf to show there is nothing in the boot.
Removing anything from the car that you don’t need.
Keeping the number of CDs in you car to a minimum.
Not hiding items in the glove compartment - it's the first place a thief will look.
Using a visible anti theft device such as a steering wheel lock, even if your vehicle is fitted with an immobiliser.

Car thieves want to be in and out of a car with minimum time and effort. If you show them there is nothing to steal, and also make it look like your car is well protected, they are less likely to target your vehicle.
Party venues can take the following steps to improve security:

Install CCTV surveillance equipment in car parks,
Employ security officers to patrol car parks,
Wherever possible have gated exits,
Have clear crime prevention signs visible reminding motorists to remove their property from their car,

Theyhave now been sighted in and around the Gaydon area, with long dogs makingout that they are hare coursing, they have damaged fencing, cut chains on gatesand dismantled gates to get where they want.

The two vehiclesspotted and driving carelessly having been seen are as follows:

Please can I make you aware of the following vehicles seen in suspicious circumstances on Sunday 20th Nov in Ilmington:
White Ford Transit - registration similar to X484... and a silver / grey Jeep Cherokee bearing the same registration plate!

Please also be aware of a Silver Subaru Legacy - L registration which has been sighted on a farm just across the county boundary in Glos involved in the attempted theft of a quad bike.

Just before 4pm yesterday a large house in Halford was subject to a burglary where a ground floor window was forced open and a quantity of silver and china was stolen. 2 vehicles were seen in the area at the time, a silver VW car and a black BMW Mini. Police incident number 234 of 21/11/11.

Warwickshire TradingStandards is not aware of any legitimate reason for a member of staff to becarrying out such calls and warns householders to be wary of any callers whoclaim to be 'officials'.

Stratford District Council launches new online service to help reunite stray dogs with their owners

Stratford-on-Avon District Council has recently introduced the Stray/Lost Dog Finder to its website, a free service developed by the Dog Warden Service to make it easier to search for missing pets.
Dog owners can now quickly report their dog as missing on the District Council’s Lost Dog Finder web page - www.stratford.gov.uk/straydogs - through simply filling in an online form. When a lost dog is found by a member of the public, its description and location is immediately uploaded onto the same virtual platform, giving the dog owner the opportunity to view and locate their missing dog at any time.
If a dog is still missing, owners can now regularly check the website to see if their dog has been found saving time having to call the District Council’s Contact Centre for updates.
As soon as the dog warden picks up the dog from where it was found it will be routinely checked for I'D. in the form of a tag (which by law all dogs must wear when out in public under The Control of Dogs Order 1992) or scanned for a microchip. If no I.D. is present the dog will be taken to holding kennels where the owner will need to pay a £50 fine, if the dog has I.D., the owner will be contacted immediately and returned to its owner.
If your dog has been found and is listed on the website, you must call the Contact Centre on 01789 260839 between 8.45am and 5pm Monday to Friday to claim your dog, please be aware, by law your dog only has 7 days to be claimed or else it could be rehomed. You will need to pay the fine and be asked some security questions relating to the dog to make sure it is your dog you are claiming and you will be told where you need to collect your dog from.
Sophie Peacock, Stratford District Council’s Animal Welfare Officer says: “With the help of this new online tool, the District Council will continue to make every effort to link dogs identified as strays with dogs reported as missing, making the process less stressful for dog owners. Although the Council is committed to returning stray dogs to their owners, I would like to take this opportunity to remind dog owners to give their pets an identity tag making it easier and less stressful for dogs and owners alike to be reunited.”

Many of you may receive emails warning of a scam involving PDS (Parcel Delivery Service) and the number 0906 6611911.

This warning seems to circulate every year at about this time and as far as I can determine the warning is no longer relevant. The line was shut down in 2005.

Introduction of 101 - police non-emergency number

101,the national police non-emergency number is being rolled out across England andWales to provide one easy way for the public to contact the police service.

Warwickshire Police and the rest of the West Midlandsregion will go-live for 101 calls from 8^th November 2011. This is already live on 01NOV.

While 999 is a well-recognised number used to reportemergencies, the 2010 British Crime Survey found that only 54% of the publicknew how to contact their local police if they want to talk to them aboutpolicing, crime or anti-social behaviour.

Theintroduction of the 101 number will help communities who do not know the numberof their local policing team or other direct contact with the force to keeptheir neighbourhoods safe by giving them an easy way to contact their localpolice force.

Thenumber is already in use in areas such as Wales, Hampshire and the Isle ofWight, Sheffield and London, and is being rolled out across all forces inEngland on a phased basis.

Initial public feedback on 101 indicates that it is beingwell used and has been well received, contributing to improvements in publicsatisfaction and confidence for people who need to call the police.

Callsto 101 will cost 15 pence per call, no matter how long a member of the publicis on the phone – this applies to both landlines and mobile phones. For thefirst time, everyone calling the police for non-emergency matters will knowexactly how much the call will cost them and will be assured of equal accesswhether they are on a pay-as-you-go mobile or a home landline.

In anemergency, the public should continue to call 999, such as when a crime is inprogress, when there is danger to life or when violence is being used orthreatened.

WarwickshirePolice will continue to operate its 01926 415000 and direct dial telephonenumbers for individuals and organisations who need to contact specificfunctions or individuals. Local policing teams will continue to be accessiblevia telephone and email, as advertised on their SNT website pages.

Furtherinformation, together with copies of the marketing material to be used to helpcommunication of 101, will be shared in due course. Warwickshire Police asksthat 101 is not publicly promoted until 8^th November 2011.

Winter burglary advice

Warwickshire Police are working to keep you safe as the darker nights draw in.
People across the Southam area can pick up security and crime prevention advice from one of the members of the Southam Safer Neighbourhood Team about the importance of not leaving their house in the dark.
Your Safer Neighbourhood team will also be patrolling in burglary hot spot areas, if no light is on in your home, curtains are not drawn, and no car is in the drive, it’s an obvious sign to an opportunist burglar that no-one is in. At this time of the year more than any other it pays to secure your home.
There are a number of simple and free ways to do this, all of which will help reduce the chance of your home becoming the next target.

Visit a local retailer to pick up a 24 hour segment timer for under £5. The timer can be used with a lamp, radio or TV to give the impression that someone’s home. Remember to use an energy efficient light bulb
Mark your property with SMART WATER, allowing your items to be traced back to yourself should they be stolen.
Keep valuables out of sight
Look your doors and windows, if you have a UPVC door make sure you have double locked it
If you are away, ask a neighbour to open and close the curtains and remove any post from the front door daily

Remember it is these small and simple steps that can help reduce crime in the area.

Warwickshire Trading Standards is warning consumers seeking loansto beware of unexpected/unsolicited approaches from 'businesses' offering thesesorts of services.
A consumer who was looking fora loan on-line received a phone call unexpectedly from someone who claimed hewas eligible for a loan of £1500.

The 'trader' requested thatthe consumer first send a payment of £155 via a voucher payment system to coverthe first month's repayment. This the consumer did, but was subsequently askedfor a further £450 in several payments over a short period of time, all ofwhich the consumer again sent, using the voucher system.

The trader then claimed thatthe vouchers were invalid and that the consumer's credit history was not good.The consumer was then asked form a further £170 which he refused to send.

At no timedid the consumer receive his £1500 loan.

This is an increasinglywidespread scam, largely perpetrated by criminal gangs and often from abroad.

Consumers, however difficultthey may be finding it to obtain a loan, should never agree to such approachesor send money. This is a scam and no loansare ever provided.

Rogue Traders Follow Genuine ContractorsWarning

Rogue door to door traders offering poorquality tarmac work are following genuine Warwickshire County Council contractors,the county’s Trading Standards Service is warning.

Genuine County Council contractors carryingout legitimate road repair work have reported being trailed by rogue tarmacgangs, who then go on to door knock householders and claim to be workingfor the Council. These rogue gangs usually claim the tarmac is ‘left over’and offer the resident or business the opportunity to have their drivewayre-surfaced.

These rogue traders are very friendly andplausible, but work is generally carried out to a very poor standard. “Leftover” tarmac has usually started to set, so trying to lay it at this stagewill give a dry and crumbly finish. All too often householders report theirdrive surface has started to crumble or crack and weeds begun to appearwithin a couple of weeks.

Although initially seeming like a cheap wayof getting a driveway improved, the final price is often higher than thehouseholder was quoted. The rogues generally demand cash payment as soonas the work is finished with no proper receipt or guarantee being given.

Can You Help Us to Clamp Downon Bogus Charity Bags?

Warwickshire Trading Standards Serviceis launching a bid to clamp down on bogus charity clothing collections(bags) – and they need your help.

Trading Standards Officers are concernedthat some householders may be duped in to donating their unwanted clothingand bric-a-brac to private traders when they thought they were giving toa registered charity. Many private traders now collect unwanted items usingcollection bags left on the doorstep. These items are then sold for profiteither in the UK or abroad.

Whilst some traders clearly state they areprivate businesses, Trading Standards Officers are concerned that manyprivate trader bags blur the distinction between what is ‘for profit’and what is for charity.

This is because some traders claim that yourdonations will benefit ‘good causes’, but it is never clear to what extent,if at all, this is. Some bags also carry bogus ‘business numbers’ whichsome consumers mistake for genuine registered charity numbers.

Warwickshire Trading Standards Officers wantto investigate these types of bags and are calling on Warwickshire residentsto help.

The whole story

A 34 year old man has had his stolen ipad returned to him after tracking it using the free software installed on it. The ipad was stolen from an address in Loughborough. The victim had downloaded free software called, ‘Mobile Me’ and an application called 'Find my ipad' which he activated and used to trace his ipad to a specific area in Birstall.

He then contacted the police to report the theft. Officers from the Charnwood Neighbourhood Action Team (NAT) combined information they held with the information from the tracker and were able to secure a search warrant.

On Tuesday 4th October 2011 officers executed the warrant and recovered the stolen ipad. A 25 year old man was arrested for handling stolen goods. He was given an adult caution as it was his first offence.

PC Jamie Hughes, from the Charnwood NAT, said; would urge all owners of ipads and the latest iphones to download the free software onto their equipment. In this case we were able to return the ipad to a very grateful man within a matter of days so it’s got to be worth it.”

In the last two years Cumbria Police have reports of 109 iphones and 7 ipads being stolen, but only 5 items were recovered.

Cable theft: an epidemic with unforseen consequences

Thieves regularly put their lives at risk by hacking away live copper cabling to try and cash in on increasing scrap metal prices. While some of them know what they're doing, teenagers are also being used by gangs, sometimes with tragic consequences.

Homes are also being stripped of highly-prized metal garden ornaments and telephone cables are also being hacked away.

BT has reported 900 cable thefts in just six months and has said 100,000 customers have been affected and left without vital communications.

It has been brought to the team's attention that Crime and Incidents are not being reported due tomembers of the community feeling as though nothing can be done.

If Crime or Incidents are not reported, then the Police can do nothing as we are not aware.
We actively encourage any member of the community to report incidents or crime to the Police no matter how small they may feel it is, you do not know that your incident can sometimes form part of a bigger picture somewhere else in the Area or County or Country.

Local Parish Councils and Magazine publications were recently asked to publish the correct numbers to report crime on, I will again include these in this email as a reminder.

Officers arrested two men from Leicester on suspicion of committing a burglary in Queens Close, Harbury, Leamington Spa at 10.15am on Wednesday 28 September.
The two men who are aged 26 and 35 years old were arrested when the vehicle they were travelling in was stopped on the A423 near Long Itchington.
The men were questioned and have now been released on police bail pending further enquiries.

Officers have arrested a 23 year old man on suspicion of burglary following an incident at the Welcome Break Services at Barn Hill on the M40 southbound at 2.55am this morning, Tuesday 27 September.
The burglary occurred when approximately 5 males wearing balaclavas and gloves used a white Ford Ranger pick up to ram the services building. An unknown amount of cash was stolen from an ATM.
The Ford Ranger pick up was abandoned by the service exit and the men are believed to have driven off in two vehicles - a dark coloured Audi estate and a transit van.
The dark coloured Audi estate was later recovered from a farm in Warmington near Banbury and officers are appealing for witnesses who may have seen the vehicle and occupants travelling in the areas of Fenny Compton, Gaydon and surrounding villages at around 3am this morning. Officers believe the men will have transferred from the Audi into another vehicle and are appealing for witnesses who may have seen any suspicious activity in the Warmington area.
Officers recovered a Ford transit also believed to have been involved in the burglary after it was abandoned in Bishops Itchington. Officers believe this vehicle may have travelled along the Fosse Way or through surrounding villages and are appealing for any witnesses who saw a Ford Transit van in the early hours of Tuesday 27 September.
The 23 year old was arrested by a dog handler with his dog from the rear garden of a property in Gaydon Road, Bishops Itchington.

In the past few days there have been some incidents to be aware off, in regards to door step traders looking for business.

During the day of the 26/09 an elderly resident of the Green, Long Itchington was approached by a unknown white male approx 30 years of age, stocky build. He asked if he could cut some of the bushes in her garden and she accepted, the male has then hacked at the bushes and demanded a large quantity of money. The male was confronted by the ladies neighbour and the male has then left in possibly a white van, leaving all the garden rubbish in the garden.

At approximately 12:15hrs today, 3 white males have approached a property in Warwick Place, Southam and asked the occupant if they would like their grass cutting and weeds killing for the sum of £200. The occupant has agreed and then 3 males have begun working.

When asked about the chemicals they were using the 3 males have got into the vehicle and left promptly leaving the grass half cut.

The males had no equipment with them except a van with the sign writing ' Green leaf Maintenance & Landscapes' & 'Special OAP rates'

The description of the males is as follows:

1) White Male, approx 50yrs old, Slim build, 5ft 8, Dark Blue Cap, Dark Green Tee with Lowther Maintenance & Landscapes on the front and back

2) White Male, approx Mid 20's, 6ft, Medium Build, Tattoos on arms, Crew-cut, Dark Green Tee with Lowther Maintenance & Landscapes on the front and back

3) White Male, approx 18yrs old, Slim Build, Dark Hair, Dark Green Tee with Lowther Maintenance & Landscapes on the front and back

White male, approx 30-40 years old, workman type clothes with sleeveless high viz, has been seen in the Merestone Close area of Southam acting suspiciously.

Been looking into properties, then knocked at one occupants house asking to read the gas, when asked what company he was from he couldn't answer the question.

He has then continued to walk up and down the street.

At approx 13:30hrs today, a young male has approached her door, and asked to test her water.
He claimed to be from Severn Trent and showed an ID card. But was still refused entry, the male has then left.

Please be aware of door stop traders, especially if they are offering services for cash in hand.
Always gather at least 3 quotes from respectable companies who you yourself have researched.

Stables / garage was broken into during the night on Friday 23/9/11

The thieves broke through metal bars & stole a Stihl chainsaw, a Sihl strimmer, a John Deere " walk behind " mower, 5 20 litre cans of diesel, & some small tools.

The chainsaw can be easily identified because the petrol filler cap is secured to the saw by a small wire to stop it falling off.

Please keep a look out as these items may be offered for sale locally.

At approx 23:55hrs on the 22/09/2011 BT received an alarm call that cable was being taken in the Napton area. It has since been confirmed theft of BT Cable.
The Cable was taken along the A423 between the Old Brickyard Rd junction and the road that leads to the Napton Ind. Est. junction.
A White Ford Transit Van and Red Ford Mondeo both of the registrations unknown by witness were seen in the St. Lawrence area of Napton
at approx 23:00hrs 22/09/2011 acting suspiciously.

What is anti-social behaviour?

The term anti-social behaviour covers a wide range of selfish and unacceptable activity that can blight the quality of community life. Terms such as ‘nuisance’, ‘disorder’ and ‘harassment’ are also used to describe some of this behaviour.

Examples include:

Yobbish behaviour and intimidating groups taking over public spaces
Vandalism, graffiti and fly-posting
People dealing and buying drugs on the street
