15/11/2011 Trading Standards Update - Knocker scam

15/11/2011 Council Officer Warning Kenilworth

Warwickshire Trading Standards Service is warning Kenilworth residents about a man who is reported to have been door knocking in the area, claiming to work for Warwickshire County Council and offering to 'reduce residents council tax'. The caller is believed to be wearing a Warwickshire County Council badge. Warwickshire Trading Standards is not aware of any legitimate reason for a member of staff to be carrying out such calls and warns householders to be wary of any callers who claim to be 'officials'.
  1. Use a door chain
  1. Always check the callers ID and verify they are genuine by phoning a publically listed telephone number, not one they give you.
  1. Do not allow anyone in to your home you don't know or trust
  1. If in doubt, say no and close the door, or better still , don't open the door in the first place.

For more information on all scams, visit our website: www.warwickshire.gov.uk/scams

Lost Dog? - New online service from SDC

Dear All,

Please see the below message.

Stratford District Council launches new online service to help reunite stray dogs with their owners

Stratford-on-Avon District Council has recently introduced the Stray/Lost Dog Finder to its website, a free service developed by the Dog Warden Service to make it easier to search for missing pets.
Dog owners can now quickly report their dog as missing on the District Council’s Lost Dog Finder web page - www.stratford.gov.uk/straydogs - through simply filling in an online form. When a lost dog is found by a member of the public, its description and location is immediately uploaded onto the same virtual platform, giving the dog owner the opportunity to view and locate their missing dog at any time.
If a dog is still missing, owners can now regularly check the website to see if their dog has been found saving time having to call the District Council’s Contact Centre for updates.
As soon as the dog warden picks up the dog from where it was found it will be routinely checked for I'D. in the form of a tag (which by law all dogs must wear when out in public under The Control of Dogs Order 1992) or scanned for a microchip.  If no I.D. is present the dog will be taken to holding kennels where the owner will need to pay a £50 fine, if the dog has I.D., the owner will be contacted immediately and returned to its owner.
If your dog has been found and is listed on the website, you must call the Contact Centre on 01789 260839 between 8.45am and 5pm Monday to Friday to claim your dog, please be aware, by law your dog only has 7 days to be claimed or else it could be rehomed.  You will need to pay the fine and be asked some security questions relating to the dog to make sure it is your dog you are claiming and you will be told where you need to collect your dog from.
Sophie Peacock, Stratford District Council’s Animal Welfare Officer says: “With the help of this new online tool, the District Council will continue to make every effort to link dogs identified as strays with dogs reported as missing, making the process less stressful for dog owners.  Although the Council is committed to returning stray dogs to their owners, I would like to take this opportunity to remind dog owners to give their pets an identity tag making it easier and less stressful for dogs and owners alike to be reunited.”

Many of you may receive emails warning of a scam involving PDS (Parcel Delivery Service) and the number 0906 6611911.

This warning seems to circulate every year at about this time and as far as I can determine the warning is no longer relevant. The line was shut down in 2005.

See:
and

However there is still a sinister side to this email as by sending it on to all of your contacts you could be helping someone to compile a list of email addresses for future spamming if you system is insecure.

For a more general warning see the information below from PhonePayPlus on 09 numbers. Note in particular that numbers to 091 numbers can be any cost per minute or any cost per call. You may be able to bar calls to these numbers. Check with your telecom supplier.

Warwickshire Police on Facebook

101 - Now its easier to make a non-emergency call to the police

More about 101
http://www.police.uk/101

Introduction of 101 -  police non-emergency number

101, the national police non-emergency number is being rolled out across England and Wales to provide one easy way for the public to contact the police service.

Warwickshire Police and the rest of the West Midlands region will go-live for 101 calls from 8th November 2011. This is already live on 01NOV.

While 999 is a well-recognised number used to report emergencies, the 2010 British Crime Survey found that only 54% of the public knew how to contact their local police if they want to talk to them about policing, crime or anti-social behaviour.

The introduction of the 101 number will help communities who do not know the number of their local policing team or other direct contact with the force to keep their neighbourhoods safe by giving them an easy way to contact their local police force.

The number is already in use in areas such as Wales, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, Sheffield and London, and is being rolled out across all forces in England on a phased basis.

Initial public feedback on 101 indicates that it is being well used and has been well received, contributing to improvements in public satisfaction and confidence for people who need to call the police.

Calls to 101 will cost 15 pence per call, no matter how long a member of the public is on the phone – this applies to both landlines and mobile phones. For the first time, everyone calling the police for non-emergency matters will know exactly how much the call will cost them and will be assured of equal access whether they are on a pay-as-you-go mobile or a home landline.

In an emergency, the public should continue to call 999, such as when a crime is in progress, when there is danger to life or when violence is being used or threatened.

Warwickshire Police will continue to operate its 01926 415000 and direct dial telephone numbers for individuals and organisations who need to contact specific functions or individuals. Local policing teams will continue to be accessible via telephone and email, as advertised on their SNT website pages.

Further information, together with copies of the marketing material to be used to help communication of 101, will be shared in due course. Warwickshire Police asks that 101 is not publicly promoted until 8th November 2011.

For further information, please contact us, or visit www.police.uk/101.
