Trading Standards Upate - 25/06/2012

25/06/2012 Pensions Scam

A Warwickshire Trading Standards Officer recently took an unexpected call from a man called Derek who claimed he was entitled to £1000 under a pension scheme. The caller asked the Trading Standards Officer if he had ever taken out any private pensions and then asked for details. At that point the Trading Standards Officer asked the caller for the name of his company – and the line went dead!

Warwickshire Trading Standards advises consumers not to provide any personal or financial information to unexpected callers. If you believe the call to be genuine, ask for their name, company name and address and a publically listed telephone number to call them back on.

25/06/2012 Door to Door Lottery

Warwickshire Trading Standards are reminding residents to ask for identification if they are approached on the doorstep by charity collectors after reports of people going door to door in South Warwickshire selling lottery tickets.

Please feel free to cascade this information to whom ever you feel appropriate (including using the information in your newsletters/websites etc.).

If you have any information you wish to provide to Warwickshire Trading Standards Service, either for our information, or to appear in future email alerts, please email me.

Alert for Horse Owners

See the Horsewatch BLOG for other incidents

It has come to the Safer Neighbourhood Team's attention that within the past week a local horse has been discovered to have had it's mane plaited.

This can sometimes be a sign of a future theft, as it is known that thieves will mark a horse that is to be stolen at a later date.

These can be found in ways such as:

plaiting of the mane or tail
cutting of the mane or tail
placing marks e.g. paint on it's fur
leaving an item that stands out on the stable door or gate to the field e.g. half a toilet roll

If you find any of these markings, take a photograph of it and contact Warwickshire Police on 101 and report it to our control room.

We had a couple of these incidents last year and fortunately no Horses were taken, so let's remain vigilant.

Kind Regards,

Claire Murray

Beware the Knockers - Land Rover stolen

I have just received a call from a resident in Little Pittern, Kineton, that his Land Rover has been stolen.  It should come as a surprise to no one that two males knocked on his door two days previously; they said they were reformed criminals working on a rehabilitation scheme.  Yeah right!
Essex Police are in no doubt that their residents should ring 101 whenever these people are in the area and I quote, ‘If a Nottingham Knocker visits you, please inform police in order for us to keep track of where they are.”.
I intend to call 101 and inform Warwickshire police whenever I see these men in Kineton. I will not wait for them to knock on my door.

The latest scam on YOUR Doorstep

Today, 13 June, a resident in Fenny Compton received two parcels that they weren't expecting. They didn't open the parcels but shortly afterwards there was a call to say that there had been a mistake and that the parcels would be collected in the morning. However a man called soon after to collect them.

Fortunately a relative happened to be visiting and alerted the police when he discovered that the parcels contained mobile phones. A quick thinking local tradesmen also realised that something was "not quite right" and took a photograph of the taxi in which the man had arrived.

There was a further phone call and a visit from a well-known delivery company attempting to recover the parcels which by this time had already been collected by the police.

Please be very wary of receiving goods that you haven't ordered and make sure that you warn vulnerable relatives and friends of this scam.
