Amazon Scam - Be warned
From a Local NW Coordinator:
"I have received a very realistic email today purporting to be an acknowledgment from Amazon for an order which I had not placed. The supposed supplier was American and the amount was for $882. 75; re an Apple Ipad Tablet and some screen protectors.
I suppose that the senders would like you to get in touch with them and in the course of the discussion they would ask you for your credit card details. Fortunately, my security programme classified this email as ‘spam’ which is unusual for emails involving Amazon and my suspicions were aroused.
My credit card company confirmed that it was a ‘phishing’ attempt"

Duster Sellers - Warning from Trading Standards
4/08/2010
‘On Probation’ Doorstep Sales Warning
Warwickshire residents have reported receiving door to door sales visits from people claiming to be young offenders working on community redress probation schemes. The sales people are reported to be selling household products and using fake ID. They may have come from the Nottingham area.
Warwickshire Trading Standards Service believe that the door to door sellers are using this probation scheme ‘story’ to encourage people to buy from them when they may not otherwise do so.
To our knowledge no probation service runs a scheme of this nature where ex-offenders sell items door to door.
Trading Standards Officers advise householders to think twice before buying goods or services door to door.

Warwickshire County Council Trading Standards Alert
23/07/2010 Rugby Rogue Traders Alert
Warwickshire County Council Trading Standards Officers are warning Rugby householders to beware of a group of rogue traders pressurising people in to accepting offers of gardening, guttering and tarmacing work, door to door. The Trading Standards Service has received several complaints this week from residents who were approached on the doorstep and ended up paying for very poor quality work. The traders did not provide any cancellation rights, (a criminal offence) nor reveal their names, addresses or telephone numbers.
Householders are advised to:
Remember: It can be hard to tell a good trader from a bad one on the doorstep. It might be better just to keep your door closed.
If you have been a victim of a rogue trader, contact Consumer Direct on 08454 04 05 06. For more information on rogue traders and doorstep crime, visit: www.warwickshire.gov.uk/doorstep
