MERRIE LION / STREET PARTY 2nd June - LATEST

ALMOST THERE………………..

1.      THANK YOU FENNY COMPTON! We would like to say a huge 'thank you' to all our shareholders and the village for being so supportive and patient over the months. It has been hard work but we are very close to re-opening our village pub.

2.      JUBILEE STREET PARTY Saturday 2 June from 4pm. Wet weather caused delays in building so we are not expecting the pub to be fully open, but we will make good use of the car park/beer garden. The celebrations start at 4pm and will continue until 22,00. There will be a hog roast, burgers and sausages, as well as beer, wine and plenty of soft drinks. The Tots and Toddler group have kindly lent some play equipment for the under-5s, there will be face painting, skittles, competitions and a raffle (prizes gratefully received - please bring with you on the day). An amp and mike will be available for music-makers of any age and description to entertain us. The Fenny Compton Fire Brigade will have the tender on show and other village groups will be adding to the fun on the day. We hope to finish with a rousing village 'Last Night of the Proms' singsong to celebrate the Jubilee in style. All-in-all it promises to be a fabulous day for Fenny and many thanks go to the village hall committee and all who have given their support. We will need some extra help on the day, so please volunteer and call Jaccl on 770948 or Keith on 770747. Many hands make light work!

3.      OPENING. So when will the pub be open? The rain has held us up, but the bars should be open late June, with the kitchen following.

Trading Standards Update 24/05/2012

24/05/2012 Nuneaton Roofing Rogues Warning

Warwickshire Trading Standards are warning residents living in the Nuneaton areas of St. Nicholas Park and Higham Lane to be aware after a ‘roof treatment’ rogue trader was spotted in the area targeting the homes of elderly people.

It is understood that the trader may have been offering to apply chemical treatments to roofs and clean guttering etc. for very high £1000+ prices. It is hard to tell a good trader from a bad one on the doorstep – keep your door closed.

24/05/2012 Rogue Driveway Cleaner Rugby

Residents of Rugby are warned to beware of rogue driveway cleaners operating in their area. One rogue, driving a whiter transit van door knocked a resident and offered to pressure wash is drive for £250 with £200 up front.

The trader did the work and then demanded £2000. The consumer refused but the trader came back several times until the resident wrote a cheque for the full amount. The rogue trader was reported to be very persuasive and intimidating.

24/05/2012 Bogus Phone Calls

Warwickshire Trading Standards has received several complaint s about bogus phone calls.
A Warwickshire resident received an unexpected phone call offering him a loan in return for a £60 upfront fee. The consumer paid and was later called again to ask for another £200. This was again paid. The trader then called once more to ask for a further £100. The consumer then refused and asked for the £260 he had already paid. The trader refused. The consumer was not given the bogus callers name or address and paid in untraceable UKcash vouchers. It is possible that the consumer had previously been looking for loans and may have been expecting phone calls from genuine businesses.
Several consumers have reported bogus PPI claim phone calls. One consumer was phoned to say that she had ‘won’ a Payment Protection Insurance claim, but to receive her ‘cheque’ she would need to send £600 in UKash vouchers. The consumer was told that someone would call at her property to deliver the cheque. The consumer did not send any money.
A resident reported receiving a bogus call from someone claiming to be from The Ministry of Justice. The caller claimed he had a cheque for her of £3200, compensation for bad bank practise. The caller then asked for her bank details. These were not given.
Warwickshire Trading Standards advice:
·        Never reveal personal or financial information to unexpected callers, or callers you do not trust.
·        If you are expecting a call from a genuine company about a loan or compensation claim and believe the call to be real, ask to phone back on a publically listed telephone number. Don’t mistake a real company for a bogus one!
·        Never send any money in order to receive money in these types of situations. If you are offered a cheque, it will probably be forged or stolen and will eventually bounce.
 24/05/2012 ‘Lottery’ Wins
A consumer reported receiving a letter that informed her she had ‘won’ a lottery draw of £521. She was requested to complete a form with her name, address, phone number and email address and the cheque would be delivered by courier.
She was also told that she would need to pay 10% to a third party for the delivery. Had she received the cheque it would undoubtedly been either stolen or forged and any money she then paid out to have received it would be lost.
In a similar case, another consumer received a phone call from someone claim to be from Camelot. The caller told the consumer that she had ‘won’ an ‘in-house’ lottery. The caller first asked for the resident’s bank details and then asked her to go to her local post office and make a MoneyGram deposit of £1200 to receive her winning cheque. She was told that VAT needed to be paid on her ‘winnings’.
Warwickshire Trading Standards advice:
·        Never reveal personal or financial information to unexpected callers, or callers you do not trust.
·        Never send any money in order to receive a prize win.
·        Remember, you cannot win a lottery you have not entered.

Questions & Answers
Don’t forget to visit our website: www.cswsuperfastbroadband.org.uk

Reminder

Don’t forget to complete the surveys on our website – this is how we will show demand for the service and attract a better outcome from our procurement to enable us to get superfast broadband cross the widest possible area www.cswsuperfastbroadband.org.uk
All Authorities across the country will be going to procurement at the same time. Bidders will go where there is highest demand, and therefore the highest return on their investment. Some areas have over 16,000 responses (having started this process before we did). We currently have over 4800 responses, so there is a long way to go if we are to attract a good tender response, and only a short time to do it in!

CSW Broadband now on social media – come and join the conversation

We are now on the major social media channels and are already creating a buzz. Join in for up-to-date information and an opportunity to influence how the project develops

Maps showing Champions and registrations now live on the website

We now have maps on our website showing where our Champions are located and where registrations have been made.  http://www.cswbroadband.org.uk/map-of-survey-responses/
You can zoom in to specific areas and gain a whole range of information. You can even go right down to street level, although it should be noted that because the data is mapped to the centre of a postcode it will not be possible to identify which specific households have completed the surveys, only the numbers of surveys completed. Because of data protection we are not able to identify Champions or survey respondents individually, but if you wish to reach your local Champion please contact your parish council for details.
If there is no Champion for your area, or if you would like to help with your local campaign please register as a Champion through the site and we will be in touch. http://www.cswbroadband.org.uk/downloads-and-resources/for-community-champions/

Champions’ packs ready for collection

For those areas where we have Champions registered we have now prepared Champions packs. These include:
·         Posters
·         Flyers
·         Postcards
·         Business cards
·         Guidance on running a local campaign and other resources that are available

Business invited to register as potential suppliers

Once we go out to tender the potential contractors will be encouraged to use local suppliers and sub-contractors wherever possible. We are creating a register of local companies that could sub-contract into the project, which includes everything from ground works and civil engineering through surveying to wireless provision and many more fields. To be in with a chance of benefitting from this opportunity please register your business: http://www.cswbroadband.org.uk/suppliers/supplier-registration. Your details will then be published on our project website and made available to companies on the BDUK Framework through our data room.
Please note that inclusion in this register does not in any way imply that these businesses have been “approved” by Warwickshire County Council, and does not guarantee that these businesses will receive work through the project.

Events in your area – come along to find out more

We will be holding events in each of the Boroughs/Districts throughout the project. The first events to help you find out more about the superfast broadband project have been run in Rugby, North Warwickshire and Stratford and the final one of this series is detailed below. More are planned in the autumn
Tuesday 22nd May 2012
Committee Room 2,
Shire Hall, Warwick
From 7pm to 8:30pm

Do you run a community website, prepare a printed newsletter or send out an e-newsletter?

We are preparing monthly bulletins for use in electronic or printed form so that you can simply cut and paste them into your own publications. If you would like to receive these updates please email broadband@warwickshire.gov.uk stating UPDATES in the message subject

Questions & Answers

How do I find my Local Broadband Champion?

Because of data protection we are not able to publish individuals’ contact details on our website. All Champions are being asked to inform the local parish council what they are doing, so the parish Clerk should have this information, although it may take a week or two for the Champions to contact the Clerks.

I don’t have a Champion in my area, how do I become one?

What do Champions do?

Champions will work with the parish council and with other residents to drive up the registered demand in their area. We are providing printed and on-line materials and also supporting in many other ways. However, we are a very small team so we do rely on Local Broadband Champions and on communities themselves to help bring improved broadband to each area.

So is my area going to get broadband without me doing anything?

Clearly the telecoms companies do have business development plans, but these are subject to commercial confidence and they will only be required to divulge these to us one we get into the actual procurement period (to ensure that we don’t fund work that they were planning to do anyway). If we are able to show high levels of demand in areas that these companies were not planning to invest in, they can be influenced to bring forward their plans or to develop into new areas so as to gain a competitive advantage. Therefore it is in everybody’s interest to register through our surveys, even if you think you ought to be getting broadband without this project.

I want my business to provide goods or services to the project but my sector is not on the list on your website

That’s not a problem. Simply complete the form in the usual manner and then enter the heading under which your service should appear in the box underneath the categories. Please try to keep this fairly generic so that we don’t end up with 1001 categories with only one business under each. If you make it too specialised the chances of a supplier using the list are also reduced. http://www.cswbroadband.org.uk/suppliers/supplier-registration/

What are the realistic chances of my area seeing any improvement in broadband speeds?

That is reliant on 3 factors:
1.       We can demonstrate demand in your area. For this we need as many completed surveys from your area as possible - 100% response from an area with 100 properties is better than 10% from an area with 1000 properties
2.       How effective our procurement is – the whole country will be going out to tender at pretty much the same time, so we need to prove a good business case and that means showing potential suppliers that there is a demand for the service and that we have reliable information about the current provision
3.       The design of the network – this will depend on the levels of demand and which technologies are used. We are stating that the solution should be capable of upgrade to the 2020 EU targets of 100% coverage at 30Mbps and 50% subscriptions at 100 Mbps or more. Until we know how the network will be designed to achieve these ambitions we cannot say exactly what speeds any given area will achieve under the current project. It should also be noted that because of the size of the national roll-out new technology is emerging all the time, and so limitations that existed just a few months ago may no longer be an issue.

Another incident in Fenny!

The same night as the incidents mentioned in the post on Friday 11th May a car was stolen from the High Street in the early hours.

Scam, Scam and Scam - 16th May 2012

16/05/2012 Lock down scam
Warwickshire computer users have contacted Trading Standards after receiving an ‘official’ looking message on their computer screen, claiming to be from the Police. The message suggests that they have visited an inappropriate website and that their computer has been ‘locked down’. They are asked to send £100 in Ukash vouchers in order to ‘unlock it’. The scam is believed to be caused by an Internet virus.

16/05/2012 We have money for you scam
If you receive a letter, telephone call or email claiming you are owed money, usually for payment protection insurance, a personal injury claim, a lotto win or tax refund – then beware! If you show interest you will be asked to send £100+ in Ukash vouchers in order to receive the bogus payment. One Warwickshire consumer sent £3000 worth of Ukash vouchers to people he thought had obtained for him a refund for his bank charges.

16/05/2012 Cheque scam
Warwickshire businesses have reported receiving orders for goods and services, paid for by cheques which are for a higher amount than the real cost. One Warwickshire trader received a cheque for £2450 for a pilate class worth £35. The trader was asked to use the remaining money to pay for an air ticket for the ‘consumer’ and keep the rest! In reality, these cheques or either forged or stolen. The cheque initially clears and when the money appears in the traders account, the scammers hope that they will send money or pay for the air ticket. However, when the bank discovers that the cheque is bogus, the money is removed from the traders account and they have lost out!
