16/07/2012 Credit Card Scam Warning
A Rugby consumer may have been targeted by a credit card scam warn Warwickshire Trading Standards Service. The consumer received an unexpected telephone call from a trader regarding a transaction the consumer was meant to have made for £2000. The consumer said he was not aware of any transaction and the caller than asked for his name, address and credit card details. When questioned, the caller said an email he received had instructed him to phone the consumer but he would not reveal who he was and put the phone down when the consumer threatened to call the Police.
Never provide any personal or financial information to people you don’t know or trust. If you believe your credit card has been compromised, contact your cad provider on a publicly listed number.
16/07/2012 Health Survey Scam
A Stratford upon Avon resident reported to Warwickshire Trading Standards receiving an unexpected phone call from someone carrying out a ‘health survey’. The caller then advised a regime of tablets and asked for card details to pay £14.95. After the consumer had provided their details the caller said the full cost would be £90, (£14.95 for a single packet). The consumer became concerned but the caller responded ‘we have your credit card details’.
Under no circumstances should anyone provide their credit card details to unexpected callers. Providing your card details could allow callers to take any amount of money out of your account they wish – and continue to do so!
16/07/2012 Car Sale Cheque Scam
Warwickshire Trading Standards Service are warning car sellers to beware bogus buyers after one Warwickshire resident reported receiving two separate email enquiries from potential overseas buyers who wanted to pay for his vehicle by cheque. The cheques would not cover the whole amount to the cost of the vehicle, but claimed the buyers, the balance would be paid after the car was shipped! Had the sale gone ahead it is likely that the balance would never have been paid and the cheque itself may have been forged or stolen, meaning they any money paid into the sellers account would eventually be removed.
16/07/2012 Computer ‘Blows’ Up
Two Warwickshire residents have recently received bogus ‘computer fix’ calls with one Nuneaton householder reporting that they were told their computer was about to ‘blow up’.
Unexpected calls from people claiming your computer is infected with viruses, in need of repair or going to ‘blow’ up are scams. Warwickshire Trading Standards advise consumers not to give these callers access to their PC’s.
16/07/2012 Unwanted Calls Scam
A Leamington Spa consumer reported to Warwickshire Trading Standards that he had an unexpected phone call from someone claiming he had agreed to pay £49.90 to the trader to stop unwanted calls. The trader would not provide any details.

Security Warning – Bird Thefts – Smaller Species – 3rd. July 2012
Some few years ago we experienced a major series of some twenty thefts of small bird collections when over 2,000 various Budgerigars, Canaries and Finches were stolen. Many of those stolen were top exhibition birds and high quality breeding stock.
There was little doubt that owners were the target of the thieves as the result of attending bird shows where their birds were entered and displayed. Some people were arrested in the Midlands and a number of birds were recovered but the vast majority were never traced.
One major aspect of this series of burglaries was that there was no security installed at any single bird-house which allowed the thieves free access and on every occasion, they got clean away.
We are now suffering from another lengthy attack to our bird-houses and sheds. During the last twelve months collections have been stolen from Tamworth, Selby, Hull, Durham in the North and at Taunton, Bedfont, Northolt and three times in the region of Southampton in the South. In recent weeks other complete collections have been taken by thieves at West Drayton, Middlesex and on 24th.June 2012 at Dagenham in Essex. This comprised of an extensive number of specialist Finches of extremely high value.
It is vital that all such bird-keepers and breeders be aware of this developing pattern of crime and seek security advice to help protect their birds. We must make it difficult for the thieves and with extra vigilance we hope that descriptions of offenders and their vehicles may be obtained.
As usual any information which may assist the Police in this matter contact me in the usual way or phone 101.

Beware of callers in BT jackets
Please be aware that sometime during the night of 7 into 8 July offenders broke into a company vehicle parked outside a home in Clover Way, Bedworth and stole several items from inside.
The items included 2 x BT work jackets, ID badges, a BT tool bag, a laptop bag and leads and a BT mobile phone.
Following the theft of such items there is now a concern that the jackets and ID will be used by offenders to attempt to access the homes of elderly and vulnerable people in order to search their properties for cash or, to look official when they are up to no good around other homes.
If you see a BT worker where you feel that they should not necessarily be or, you have one call at your home, please check with BT that their business in the area is legitimate. If you are still concerned please report your suspicions to Police on 101. Thankyou.

With the Olympics just around the corner, Warwickshire Trading Standards are warning consumers to beware of fake ticket sellers after a Warwickshire resident paid nearly £500 for tickets from a trader who turned out to be bogus. Warwickshire Trading Standards advices homeowners to seek advice from the Energy Saving Trust for impartial help on home insulation and Warmfront grants, telephone 0300 123 1234 or visit: http://www.energysavingtrust.org.uk/

A Nuneaton resident reported to Warwickshire Trading Standards that he had received an email from someone claiming to be contacting him from abroad having had their money ‘stolen’ and asking the email recipient to send funds. These bogus requests for help are often sent using stolen email addresses.
This is well known scam. Never respond to these bogus requests and always delete the email.

PayPal Scam
One of our coordinators has just received a scam email supposedly from PayPal asking him to confirm his account details. There was an html form attached which made it appear that he was logged into his PP account. This asked for all the detail required to hijack the account and go on a spending spree with one of his cards. The "Submit" button if pressed would have sent this information to the scammer rather than PP.
Protect yourself from the scammers
Protect yourself from the scammers
- Ensure that you only logon to official financial sites by using the address you know and not a link that has been sent to you
- Use a program supplied by your bank to identify fake sites (e.g. RAPPORT)
- Remember that you should never be asked for the passwords or pins required to logon. Always ask yourself if the information requested could give someone else the ability to manage YOUR money for THEIR benefit
- Be alerted by spelling mistakes or quaint use of English. For many scammers it will be their second language.
- If it is a scam you won't be the first so Google a suspect part of the text
- Check links by hovering over them before clicking. If the address revealed is unrecognised then AVOID
- Forward the scam to the institution involved so that they can take action against the scammer

Trading Standards Update - 02/07/2012
02/07/2012 European City Guide Warning
Warwickshire businesses are warned to beware of letters and phone calls from the European City Guide.
Warwickshire County Council’s Trading Standards Service has received complaints from Warwickshire businesses that believed they were either agreeing to take a free entry or updating existing information in this directory.
However, having either agreed over the phone or returned a form, each business then received a demand for over £3000.
Further demand letters and threats of court action follow if payment is not made.
However, Warwickshire Trading Standards is unaware of any instances where this has gone beyond threats to actual court action.
The activities of this Spanish based business have already been highlighted by a number of UK and EU institutions and action has been taken against them to disrupt their activities.
Warwickshire Trading Standards advises businesses not respond to any telephone calls or letters from the European City Guide.
02/07/2012 Aggressive Selling of ‘Health Giving’ Pots and Pans
Consumers are warned to beware of door to door sales people offering ‘free’ cooking demonstrations.
Dressed as cooks, the sales people offer to prepare food for the consumer as a way to get a ‘foot in the door’ before high pressure sales techniques are used to sell householders pots and pans for hundreds of pounds.
Sales people claim they are ‘not selling anything’ before going into a pre-prepared sales pitch to claim that their pots and pans cook food in a ‘healthier’ way than other pots and pans.
Trading Standards urges householders to think twice before inviting sales people in to their homes. Consumers are reminded that if they buy goods in their home for over £35, they have 7 days in which to cancel the contract, which they must do in writing.
The email alert system is a quick, simple and cost effective means by which Warwickshire Trading Standards can alert interested individuals, community organisations, businesses, charities and others to the latest Trading Standards issues/scams etc.
Please feel free to cascade this information to whom ever you feel appropriate (including using the information in your newsletters/websites etc.).
