Good News

Please find 3 good results from the Southam Safer Neighbourhood Team in the past 24 hours.

Southam Ward Area

  • At approx 11:30am on 25/08/2012 the Southam Safer Neighbourhood Team conducted a drugs warrant on a property in Hodnell Drive, Southam. A male was detained and questioned on production and possession of cannabis. He was summons to court for a later date, and a quantity of cannabis was seized.
  • At approx 6:20pm on 25/08/2012 PC Purcell seized a vehicle that had parked in the Police Station car park for the driver having an expired driving license.

Napton Ward Area
At approx 1:15am on 26/08/2012 one of the team's Special Constables was out on routine patrols and was flagged down by a resident of Napton. He had just been assaulted by an unknown male who he had questioned looking into other residents vehicles.
The resident had obtained the vehicle registration and colour and the Special Constable quickly past these details with information on the direction the vehicle made off in onto Warwickshire Police and Northamptonshire Police Control rooms.
Northamptonshire Police found the vehicle travelling on the A361 towards Daventry, and the vehicle failed to stop for them. They finally caught the vehicle in the village of Braunston near to Daventry where 2 males known to Police were arrested.
The vehicle they had been travelling in was stolen, and items found in the vehicle suggested they were in the area with intent to commit theft.

Some positive results achieved by the local team, to provide a safe and better community.

Kind Regards,

Claire Murray

Trading Standards Update - 21/08/2012

21/08/2012 Bogus BT Caller

A consumer alerted Warwickshire Trading Standards Service to an unexpected phone call from someone falsely claiming to represent BT. The bogus caller claimed to be able to save the consumer some money on his line rental but could not tell the consumer what plan he was currently on!

The call may have originated from outside the UK.

Fraudsters or high pressure sales people working for unscrupulous businesses often use the names of large companies to try to either get the consumer to agree to a contract they would not have otherwise chosen or simply to steal financial information.

Never give personal or financial information to unexpected callers!

Britain's biggest crime hotspot: car parks?

A staggering 20% of all recorded crime is vehicle related - 22% of which takes place in car parks. ACPO and the BPA are fighting this crime with a nationwide initiative called The Safer Parking Scheme aimed at detering criminal activity and anti-social behaviour.

Safer Parking status, indicated by the Park Mark award, is accredited to parking facilities with measures that help to deter criminal activity and anti-social behaviour, thereby doing everything they can to prevent crime and reduce the fear of crime in the parking facility.

The Safer Parking Scheme is owned by the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO), and managed by the British Parking Association. The Safer Parking Scheme development managers work with accredited police assessors to provide expertise and advice to car park operators to raise standards of safety and deter crime.

Below are some fine examples of recipients of the ParkMark award, from prestigious new developments, to universities, to local council premises, all have worked hard to achieve Safer Parking status. This has resulted in a considerable reduction in crime and anti-social behaviour.

There are currently around 5000 Park Mark® awarded car parks in the UK. For more details go to www.parkmark.co.uk

Remove valuables from your vehicle

Warning to drivers to remove valuables from their vehicles after recent thefts from vehicles in South Warwickshire

This message is sent on behalf of Inspector Faz Chishty of South Warwickshire Police:

Please can all owners/drivers of motor vehicles please ensure that they remove all valuable items from their vehicles when they are left unattended.

Recently, across South Warwickshire, vehicles have been entered and items such as I Pod's, Laptops, Satnavs and passports have been stolen.

These are high value items and should at all times be removed from vehicles.
We do not wish to see an increase in such offences and ask all members of the public to take preventative action by removing their property.

Please also ensure that you call 101 non emergency number to report any suspicious persons or activity around homes, premises and vehicles in your area.  As always, if you believe that a crime is in progress please call 999.

Trading Standards Update - 30/07/2012

Recent scams reported to Warwickshire Trading Standards Service

Please feel free to cascade this information to whomever you feel appropriate (including using the information in your newsletters/websites etc.).

30/07/2012 Bank Scam

A Leamington householder reported receiving an unexpected call from someone claiming that she was owed £800 by her bank. The caller offered to visit the householder to give her the money on the doorstep!

It is unclear what the actual purpose of the visit would have been.

Warwickshire Trading Standards believe the caller might have been hoping to sign the consumer up to an agreement to reclaim miss-sold payment protection insurance (consumers can do this for themselves for free) or sell her goods or services. Distraction burglary cannot be ruled out.

30/07/2012 Card Scam

A Warwick consumer reported receiving an unexpected phone call from someone to say that an attempt had been made to use his bank/credit card to purchase goods. However, the consumer did not possess a credit/debit card described by the caller!

Warwickshire Trading Standards advise that banks will sometimes contact their customers if they believe that their credit/debit cards have been used fraudulently. However, consumers must ensure that the call is genuine. Never provide your complete card details to unexpected callers or your three digit security number – banks won’t ask for complete details in order to confirm your identity.

30/07/2012 Job Search Warning

Warwickshire Trading Standards advises job hunters to check that job offers are genuine after complaints from Warwickshire residents who applied, were interviewed and offered ‘IT posts’ and then asked immediately for up-front training cost fees. Job hunters need to ensure that job offers are real and not simply ways to sell training courses.
