Beware when selling onlline

I have recently received a very suspicious email offering to purchase a horse unseen. The horse was to be shipped overseas and payment was to be by PayPal. On further enquiry I find that this type of scam is common, can apply to a range of items and payment methods offered also include Western Union.

The common factors seem to be:

  1. The rather quaint use of English. (When they sort this out there will be one less red light)
  2. Overseas (no country specified) shipping
  3. Online payment required and possibly an attempt to discover information that would enable them to use your account.
If you have experienced this scam please comment.

Make a Difference Day - 29 October 2011

This autumn get involved in Make a Difference Day, the UK's biggest day of volunteering!

Last year more than 70,000 volunteers were involved in over 2,000 events, and this year's campaign will focus on activities that combat isolation by reaching out to people who might feel lonely or marginalised.

Organising an event is a great way to recruit new volunteers, make friends and have fun! Activities can range from creating bus stop gardens to renovating community centres, teaching IT skills or helping housebound neighbours.

Request the free Handbook and How-to guides today for some inspirational volunteering ideas! Call 0800 284 533, emaildifference@csv.org.uk or visit www.csv.org.uk/difference for more information.

Trading Standards Update -10/08/2011 - Solar Energy Warning

10/08/2011 Solar Energy Warning

With rising energy costs, roof top solar energy installations are becoming increasingly popular projects with many new companies entering the market offering free solar panels and free or reduced cost electricity.

However, Trading Standards Officers have received complaints from consumers who have paid large deposits of £250 for the installation of solar panels to their properties following door to door visits. In these cases, the panels were not fitted and the trader disappeared.

Warwickshire Trading Standards advises residents not to sign up with the first solar panel trader who visits your property, but seek quotes from at least 3 traders and consider the following:

1) Is the trader local and well established? You can find out how long a limited company has traded for by looking them up at: www.companieshouse.org.uk
2) Traders that offer free solar panels and free electricity can do so because they will receive income from the generation of electricity (the Feed-in tariff scheme) and from any electricity that you do not use and is exported to the grid. It may be more cost effective for you to buy your own solar panels and receive all the income yourself.
3) If a trader is only offering discounted electricity, as opposed to free electricity, the Energy Saving Trust advise that your savings will be less and you may want to consider if it is really worth going ahead.
5) The amount of money you could save will depend upon when you use electricity. You will save if you run your appliances during the day when it is 'sunny' and you are generating electricity and can benefit from it.
4) Residents should also consider what would happen to the solar panels in the event of a house move and who is responsible for their maintenance and insurance.
5) Research solar panel installations at the Energy Saving Trust: http://tinyurl.com/39gjj8x

Trading Standards Update - Sweet dreams but not with one of these!

05/08/2011 Door to Door Foam Mattress Sellers

Warwickshire Trading Standards Service is alerting residents to the activities of as yet unknown individuals who are reported to be selling foam mattresses from a large unmarked white van, door to door. Officers understand that the individuals have been stopping people in the street and offering the mattresses in addition to knocking on resident's doors. Reports have been received from Rugby and Southam (and Coventry) but the individuals could be operating elsewhere.

As with all door to door sellers, Warwickshire Trading Standards Service advises consumers not to buy from the first person who comes to your door. If you are really interested in the product, shop around.

Mattresses, like many similar products, must meet fire safety standards, so that if they catch fire they do not burn quickly or produce poisonous fumes. This is why is it is important to only buy mattresses from reputable businesses you know and trust. Look for a permanent manufacturers label saying that the mattress complies with the Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations together with the warning 'CARELESSNESS CAUSES FIRE'.
