Trading Standards Email Alert Monday 20th December 2010
20/12/2010 Phishing Scams
A phishing email has been brought to our attention. Phishing emails are sent by criminal gangs who attempt to impersonate legitimate companies. The emails they send always ask the recipient to click on a link and visit a bogus website to input personal or financial information. This is then taken and used fraudulently.
The email in this case falsely purports to come from paypal and encourages the recipient to 'dispute' the payment of subscription by clicking on a link in the email and visiting what will turn out to be a bogus website.
For more information on phishing scams visit our website: www.warwickshire.gov.uk/tradingstandards
20/12/2010 Bogus Letters
Residents are warned to not respond in any way to bogus letters, received by some Warwickshire residents, that may have originated in China. The letters claim that the recipients have the same surname as an individual who has an estate worth millions and in order to remove the funds from the country, the sender is willing to spilt the funds! This is an old but elaborate hoax and those that do contact the sender will only be asked for money to help with the 'transfer' of the non existent funds.

16/12/2010 Artists Work Worth Not a Lot!Warwickshire residents are warned to beware of door to door sales people selling paintings in the Dunchurch area and across the County. The sellers say they are Israeli art students and claim they have produced the paintings themselves and are selling them to householders to raise money for their tuition fees. The paintings are being sold for several hundred pounds each but it appears these are not students at all and the paintings are mass produced in China and are worth a few pounds. It is reported that a Dunchurch area resident paid £350 for a painting. This scam is reported to be happening across Coventry and Warwickshire.
16/12/2010 Loan Scam
Residents have reported receiving unexpected phone calls from a man claiming they were £1000 in debt with a Tesco loan. The recipients did not have a loan with Tescos or any other business and put the phone down. The callers number was recorded (an 0843 no.) and it appears to be related to a number of cold calling and automated message phone calls that other residents have been complaining about in recent months. These calls seem to originate from outside the UK and relate to paying off debt or other marketing/survey/sales information. It is understood that these calls are not in any way linked to Tescos.
Recipients of such calls are advised to put the phone down immediately and never to divulge any personal or financial information.

Pre-Christmas advice from Warwickshire Police includes:
*Do not leave gifts unattended in your car when shopping
*Do not hide your Christmas presents in your car, garden shed or in the garage where a burglar can easily break in and steal them
*Don't let someone else enjoy Christmas at your expense, please keep Christmas presents out of view of opportunist burglars until Christmas morning - it is not just the children you need to hide the presents from
*Your Christmas tree looks lovely in the window with it’s twinkling lights. But leaving the curtains open enables burglars to look inside your house to see what there is to steal. Keep the curtains closed at night time
*If you go out remember to leave some lights on to give the impression that someone is at home. Invest in a timer switch so that lights come on and off at different times to deter thieves and save energy
*Leave a radio, tuned to a talk station, playing when you go out. A burglar is less likely to break in if they can hear voices inside.

Rural Theft
Between 2pm on Sunday 5th December and 12 midday on Tuesday 7th Decemebr2010, thieves broke into an unoccupied house in the Snowford Hill area of Long Itchington. Various items were stolen including a Hayter Lawnmower and Stihl Strimmer.
If you saw anything suspicious during this period or have been offered either of the items listed above, please contact Southam Police quoting Incident Number 137 - 07.12.10.
Crime Prevention advice:
Perimeter - Keep your hedges, fences and gates in good repair. Ditches form a natural barrier. Fit gates with capping hinges so they cannot be removed easily. Consider perimeter detection systems.
Tools/Machinery - Record the make and serial number of items. Mark or stamp easily removed items with your postcode, followed by the first two letters of your farm’s name, or other identifying marks. Consider making a secure cage or structure for more valuable items, which should be sited within a secure and alarmed building. Also consider forensic marking products.
Fuel – Ideally locate fuel tanks in an overlooked area away from main roads. Pumps should have locking devices and/or isolator switches. Also consider a fuel tank alarm.
Animal - Check animals regularly. Consider marking your animals in a way which would make them identifiable. Keep photographs of valuable animals.
If you have any information about this incident please e-mail 'southamfarmwatch@warwickshire.pnn.police.uk' or please ring 01926 415000 and ask for the Communications Centre. Please tell them that you are ringing in in response to a message

Heating for less - If you use oil
Welcome to the HeatingOilForLess (HOFL) scheme.
The majority of the communication is via email as this makes it more practical for me to run the HOFL scheme. I collate all member requirements for a scheduled order date. The most competitive price is then obtained from a choice of 13 local Suppliers with delivery normally the same week.
Payment is made directly to the Supplier (normally following an invoice from them to you following delivery). If you have not been a customer of the chosen supplier before, they reserve the right to request payment prior to or upon delivery and will contact you via phone to arrange. HOFL does not take part in the payment process.
Once I have negotiated the best price I update all HOFL scheme members via email with the negotiated price.
Please spread the word about the scheme to your neighbours and friends – the more who join and use the scheme, the more money can be saved and the greater benefit to the environment with reduced fuel lorries on our roads. There’s a wealth of information about the scheme on the website.
Best wishes

Young Cyclists in Fenny Compton
During these dark evenings several teenagers have been spotted on bikes without any sort of lights, reflectors or reflective clothing.
Parents please be aware that this is extremely hazardous. To avoid the unthinkable, please ensure any young person in your family who rides a bike (just nipping to the shops perhaps, or back from the stables?) has a bike with lights and good reflective clothing or reflective band. A van driver had to find his brakes pretty sharpish recently when he rounded to a corner to find two young ladies zipping through the village without lights or reflectors!

Computer 'Full' - Unsolicited call - A warning from Trading Standards
The Trading Standards Service has received reports that PC users have been contacted by someone claiming to represent Microsoft (by phone unsolicited) to say that their computer is 'full' and to log on to it so the 'problem' can be fixed.
Trading Standards are advising PC users that this is likely to be a scam or similar underhand sales technique, perpetrated by a third party. Microsoft will never make an unsolicited (unexpected call) to fix your computer.
It is possible that these calls are from some one who may want to gain remote access to your PC. Giving access to someone you don't know could lead to your PC becoming infected with viruses and other malware, or your personal or financial information being stolen and used fraudulently. Or you may have software downloaded on to your PC or 'work' done for which you may then be asked for payment.
For more information, please visit our website: www.warwickshire.gov.uk/tradingstandards

Horse found - Arson Attacks & Large Haul of Stolen Tack
Dear All,
thankyou for the responses to yesterday's email about the missing horse. The Horse was found several miles away by the owner.
Our colleagues in South Worcestershire have made us aware that there were a number of arson attackes at isolated barns in the Astwood Bank and Cookhill areas in July and there has now been a further attack at a barn on Bouts Lane between Cookhill and Inkberrow.
Please be mindful of this and please report any suspicious activity to police.
Equestrian enthusiasts have been alerted by South Worcestershire Police to be wary of offers of equipment after an estimated £100,000 worth of saddles and other riding equipment was taken during a burglary.
The equipment - including 90 saddles - was stolen fron Horsatack Saddlery on Roman Way Industrial Park in Droitwich during the night of 16th into 17th October.
South Worcestershire officers are keen to hear from anyone who is offered equipment from an unexpected source as well as anyone who may have information about the incident. The number to contact South Worcestershire Police is 0300 333 3000
A Rural Watch member from a farm premises outside Offchurch made us aware yesterday of a suspicious incident which occurred at his farm premises at around 2pm on Sunday afternoon 17th October.
The member was returning to his premises when he noticed a woman sitting in a green Rover vehicle which was parked on a grass verge near to the entrance to the farm.
The member and his father were suspicious and stopped to ask the woman if she was OK. The woman replied that she was waiting for her boyfriend who was walking his dog.
As they drove into the farm the member decided to check the farm yard to make sure everything was as it should be and saw a male running from the premises.
The member gave chase and caught up with the offender who had a screwdriver in his hand, others in his pockets and some electrical wire.
When challenged he gave the explanation that he was looking for some water pipe. The member asked where his dog was and he could not give a satisfactory answer.
The male then ran off as the member believed that he may well have used the screwdriver in his hand as a weapon if provoked.
The male is described as looking like a malnourished traveller. He was in his late 30's and around 5ft 10in tall and was wearing a grey and blue striped hoodie over short cropped hair. The offender also had very bad teeth.
If you have any information about this incident please e-mail 'southamfarmwatch@warwickshire.pnn.police.uk' or please ring 01926 415000 and ask for the Communications Centre. Please tell them that you are ringing in in response to a message

Line painting scam warning in Leamington
Warwickshire County Council’s Trading Standards Service is warning of rogue traders targeting schools, churches and community groups in the Leamington area. Officers have received several reports this week from various organisations that have been approached by a door-to-door trader offering cut-price line painting on roads outside buildings or in car parks.
They say they are working on behalf of the county council or its contractors and have lots of spare yellow paint because they have been asked to use red paint when line marking instead.
If work is carried out, it is likely to be of very poor standard and over-charged, costing even more money to put right, turning what seems to be a cheap deal in to a very big mistake.
The rogue traders send a smartly dressed representative in to schools, community centres and churches, offering cut-price line painting.
However, neither the county council nor its contractors would participate in door-to-door selling and certainly wouldn’t carry out any work without prior agreement through the necessary channels and would use reputable companies.
It is also worth noting that any work carried out on the public highway can only be done with the express permission from the local authority.

Prepayment Electricity Scam
20/09/2010
Householders Scammed With Illegal Electricity Top-Ups
Householders who use electricity prepayment meters are buying half price electricity top-ups keys for cash on the doorstep, not realising that they will end up having to pay twice for their electricity.
Criminal gangs are cloning electricity meter top-up keys and selling them door to door for half their normal costs i.e. a £50 top up for £25. Householders are buying them in the false belief that they will save money. However, energy companies detect when they have not received payment for electricity used. As the energy credit is illegal any customer buying top-ups on the doorstep will end up paying twice, first to the criminal and then to their energy supplier.
Energy companies and Consumer Focus, the consumer watchdog, have reported that up to 85,000 households across theUK have been affected by the doorstep scam.
Warwickshire County CouncilTrading Standards Service is urging Warwickshire residents to only buy electricity credit through official channels (recognized PayPoint or Payzone shops or The Post Office).

Energy companies and Consumer Focus, the consumer watchdog, have reported that up to 85,000 households across the
Warwickshire County Council
